June Arbitrons
KIIS-FM ruled the Los Angeles airwaves in the June Arbitron ratings
results released last week, making it a solid streak of dominance for the top-40
station. KIIS has been number one since the year began, even though it was
down a bit (0.3) from May and one full point down from January, when it earned
a 6.0 share of the audience. For June, KIIS earned a 5.0 share.
Coming in on the heals of KIIS was KFI, the powerhouse talk station
with a 4.6, followed by light rock KOST at 4.4.
The 4th-place station may be the most interesting for a number of reasons.
You may recall that KLSX dropped talk for top-40 as Amp Radio in February;
many observers felt that KIIS may be in trouble. Turns out it wasnt KIIS,
or any other single station for that matter. But Amp Radio did do well, more
than doubling its rating as a talk station. For June Amp earned a 3.9 share,
while the last full month as talk (in January) it had a 1.8. Not a bad increase.
Rounding out the top-ten, we had KRTH tied with Amp at 3.9, KLVE with
3.8, KBIG at 3.7, and Jack-FM, KLAX, Power 106 and KTWV all
tied at 3.2.
Alternative rocker KROQ surprised many observers, earning its lowest
rating in recent memory: 2.9, down from 3.0. Seems it was not long ago that
KROQ was hanging with the top five. Keep in mind, though, they are still tied
for 12th overall. KNX had a 2.5 share at 19th place overall, yet still
the second most popular AM station in town. AM has a long way to go.
KSWD The Sound inched up to 1.3 after declining to 1.2 in May, almost
matching its all-time April high of 1.4. KLOS, meanwhile, maintained
at 2.4.
The highest-rated public station was classical-formatted KUSC, which
tied KLOS for 21st place. KPCC was slightly more than a half-point behind,
earning a 1.7 share at 24th place. Further down the list were KCRW and KKJZ at
0.6, and KPFK at 0.1.
Each rating is an estimate of the percentage of listeners aged 6 and over tuned
to a station between the hours of 6 AM and 12 midnight as determined by Arbitron.
Each listing shows the rating share for May, followed by June.

Dont recognize some of these stations? Neither did I ... many out-of-town
stations now show up in the Los Angeles ratings with the new Arbitron Portable
People Meter system. Ill cover some of these little-known (and hard to
get) gems in future columns.
